BJP Objection Sinks Natarajan's Rajya Sabha Bid, Congress Faces Cross-Voting Fear in MP

Natarajan's Rajya Sabha nomination rejected by MP over alleged affidavit disclosure failure.

In a significant setback for the Congress ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections in Madhya Pradesh, the nomination of party candidate Meenakshi Natarajan was rejected on Tuesday. The development has altered the political landscape of the election and provided the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with a major advantage in the contest for the Upper House seats from the state.

The controversy centered on objections raised by BJP state general secretary Rahul Kothari, who alleged that Natarajan had not fully disclosed details of a legal case in the affidavit submitted along with her nomination papers. Following scrutiny of the nomination documents, election authorities rejected her candidacy, dealing a blow to the Congress's electoral calculations.

The Rajya Sabha election in Madhya Pradesh is being conducted for three vacant seats. The BJP has fielded Tarun Chugh, Mahesh Kewat, and Rajneesh Agrawal as its candidates. With Natarajan's nomination no longer in contention, the ruling party's prospects in the election have received a significant boost, although official electoral processes are yet to be completed.

The rejection also comes amid reports of unease within the Congress over the choice of candidate. Some party leaders had expressed concerns regarding the decision to nominate Natarajan instead of senior leader Digvijaya Singh. The internal criticism had surfaced even before the nomination controversy emerged, indicating divisions within sections of the party leadership.

Senior Congress leader Naresh Gyanchandani had publicly questioned the decision, warning that replacing an experienced leader with a different candidate could create the possibility of cross-voting during the Rajya Sabha election. He had argued that renomination of Singh would have ensured greater political security for the party and reduced the risk of unexpected electoral outcomes.

The latest development adds another layer of complexity to the Rajya Sabha contest in Madhya Pradesh and is likely to trigger further political debate in the coming days. While the Congress may explore legal or procedural options available to it, the rejection of Natarajan's nomination has undoubtedly strengthened the BJP's position and intensified scrutiny of the opposition party's candidate selection process ahead of the election.
