BJP MP Raises Allegation Of Police Nexus In Gujarat Illegal Liquor Trade

BJP MP alleges police nexus in illegal liquor trade Gujarat.

A political controversy has emerged in Gujarat after Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament Mansukh Vasava alleged that illegal liquor and gambling networks are operating in the state’s Narmada district despite the official prohibition on alcohol, raising serious questions over enforcement and possible police complicity.

In a handwritten letter addressed to Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, the Bharuch MP claimed that an organised racket is actively facilitating the smuggling and distribution of alcohol across the Maharashtra border into Narmada district. He alleged that the operation functions with the alleged support or negligence of certain local police personnel, enabling the uninterrupted movement of illegal consignments.

Vasava’s allegations have intensified scrutiny of enforcement mechanisms in Gujarat, a state that has enforced prohibition laws for decades. According to his letter, the network is not limited to alcohol distribution alone but also includes gambling activities, forming what he described as a structured underground system operating in multiple layers across the region.

The MP further claimed that large quantities of so-called “English liquor” are being transported into the district and distributed through coordinated channels that bypass checkpoints. He alleged that the movement of these consignments suggests systematic facilitation rather than isolated incidents, pointing to what he described as a nexus between organised operators and elements within the local police administration.

He also named certain police personnel and station-level officials in the Narmada district, demanding immediate disciplinary action against them. Vasava warned that continued inaction could worsen substance abuse issues among young people and urged the state leadership to intervene decisively to dismantle the alleged network.

The allegations have created political ripples within the ruling party itself, as Vasava belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party, which governs Gujarat. His public criticism of law enforcement has drawn attention to internal concerns over prohibition enforcement and the effectiveness of policing in border districts. State authorities are yet to issue a detailed response to the allegations, while the issue is expected to trigger administrative scrutiny and possible internal inquiries into enforcement practices in the affected region.
