BJP MP Brutally Attacked by TMC Goons Amid Bengal Flood Crisis
Tribal leader Khagen Murmu targeted while aiding flood victims.
BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a prominent tribal leader and two-time representative from Malda North, was viciously assaulted by alleged TMC goons on Monday while en route to Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri's Dooars region. The attack occurred as Murmu and his delegation were heading to provide urgent relief and rescue support to communities ravaged by relentless rains, devastating floods, and landslides that have left hundreds homeless and infrastructure in ruins. Videos circulating on social media show the MP suffering severe head injuries from stone-pelting, with blood streaming down his face as he was rushed to safety.
Eyewitness accounts paint a grim picture of the ambush. Murmu's convoy was reportedly pelted with stones, shattering windscreens and causing chaos on the rain-soaked roads. BJP MLA Dr. Shankar Ghosh's vehicle was also targeted in the same incident, highlighting the coordinated nature of the assault. Local BJP workers claim that West Bengal Police stood by as mere spectators, failing to intervene despite frantic calls for help. "This is not just an attack on one man; it's an assault on humanity and democracy," said a BJP karyakarta at the scene, who helped ferry the injured MP to a nearby hospital.
The incident has ignited a firestorm of condemnation from the BJP, which has squarely blamed Trinamool Congress (TMC) "goons" for orchestrating the violence. BJP IT Department chief Amit Malviya took to X to lambast West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her administration of being "missing in action" while she attended a cultural carnival in Kolkata. "While Mamata Banerjee dances at her Kolkata Carnival, the TMC and state administration are absent from flood-hit areas. BJP leaders helping the people are being attacked for their compassion. This is TMC’s Bengal, where cruelty rules," Malviya posted, sharing graphic videos of the attack that have since garnered thousands of views and shares.

Murmu, known for his grassroots advocacy for tribal rights and flood-affected communities, has been a vocal critic of the TMC government's handling of natural disasters in North Bengal. His efforts to secure central aid for erosion control and rehabilitation in Malda have often put him at odds with state authorities. Supporters rallied outside the hospital where he is receiving treatment, demanding immediate action against the perpetrators. "Khagen ji was going there to help our brothers and sisters who lost everything. How can helping people be a crime?" questioned one protester, echoing the growing frustration among locals who feel abandoned by the ruling party.
As the Dooars region grapples with one of its worst floods in years—displacing over 50,000 people and destroying tea gardens and farmlands—the attack underscores the deepening political fault lines in West Bengal. BJP leaders have called for a high-level probe by the Election Commission and central intervention, labeling it a "state-sponsored assault on opposition voices." Meanwhile, TMC spokespersons have dismissed the allegations as "BJP's drama to gain sympathy," urging calm and promising an internal inquiry. With by-elections looming and tensions simmering, this incident threatens to further polarize the state's volatile political landscape.
The broader context of violence against BJP workers in Bengal has drawn national attention, with past incidents like the killing of a BJP mandal secretary in Cooch Behar and booth-capturing allegations during panchayat polls fueling accusations of a "jungle raj" under TMC rule. As Murmu recovers, his ordeal serves as a stark reminder of the perils faced by opposition figures in disaster zones, where aid often becomes a battleground for political one-upmanship. Stay tuned for updates as investigations unfold and the flood crisis deepens.
