Police have registered an FIR against BJP Rajya Sabha MP Nagendra Ray, popularly known as Anant Maharaj, over his alleged derogatory remarks about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at an event in Siliguri. Police said the case was registered after Ray allegedly referred to Netaji as a “war criminal”, triggering political and public controversy in West Bengal. The remarks by the Rajbanshi leader from north Bengal drew criticism from political leaders and organisations, with the comments being viewed as an insult to one of India's most prominent freedom fighters. The police action comes amid growing pressure over the statement and the demand for accountability over remarks concerning Netaji.
West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari said Ray's remarks were “unforgiveable”, while also pointing to his age. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Adhikari said Ray had uploaded a video on social media on Thursday night addressing the controversy. He added that the matter should now be dealt with according to the law. “He has done something which is unforgiveable. But he is a senior citizen. He has uploaded a video on social media on Thursday night. Looking at his age I think it should be taken with a positive note. Rest law will take its own course. I have nothing to say on that,” Adhikari said.
Ray subsequently released a video statement in which he addressed the controversy surrounding his comments. He said his remarks about Netaji were intentional, while also expressing regret if his words had caused emotional hurt. “With respect to Netaji, I would like to state that if unintentional comments have hurt anyone emotionally, then I am sorry from the core of my heart,” Ray said in the video. The controversy has placed the BJP MP at the centre of a political dispute in West Bengal, where Netaji remains a highly revered historical figure. His legacy continues to carry particular significance in Bengal, and comments questioning or criticising his role in India's freedom struggle frequently attract strong political and public reactions.
