BJP MLA Mahesh Trivedi Faces Backlash after ‘10% Commission’ Video goes Viral
Kanpur BJP MLA Mahesh Trivedi faces backlash after a viral video allegedly shows him admitting to taking a 10% commission.
A purported video of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Mahesh Trivedi from Uttar Pradesh’s Kidwai Nagar constituency has ignited a firestorm of controversy after he was allegedly heard claiming that MLAs receive a “10 per cent commission” from their MLA funds in addition to their salaries. The remarks, reportedly made during a party workers’ meeting in Kanpur as part of a service fortnight event, surfaced on social media on Thursday, September 11, 2025, drawing widespread condemnation.
In the video, Trivedi is seen addressing BJP workers, stating, “We [MLAs] are getting our salaries honestly, and on top of that, we get 10 percent commission from the MLA fund. But what are you [workers] getting out of it?” He further lamented that grassroots workers receive “nothing in return” for their efforts, urging them to at least “earn some virtue” for their service. The comments have sparked accusations of corruption, with critics questioning the transparency of MLA fund allocations.
The controversy deepened as Trivedi allegedly made inflammatory remarks about Hindus, comparing them unfavorably to animals. “Even animals use their horns for self-defense, but Hindus do not act in their own defense,” he reportedly said, advising Hindus to keep swords and lances at home for protection. These statements have been widely criticized as inciting communal tension and promoting violence.

Neither Trivedi nor the BJP leadership has issued an official response to the video as of September 12, 2025. The viral clip has fueled political debates, with opposition parties seizing the opportunity to slam the BJP for alleged corruption and divisive rhetoric. Social media platforms are abuzz with reactions, amplifying calls for accountability.
Trivedi, a seasoned politician and former Minister of State for Stamp Duty Tax and Entertainment Tax, has represented Kidwai Nagar since 2022. This is not his first brush with controversy; in 2022, he was booked for allegedly encouraging supporters to physically assault political rivals, and in 2023, he publicly reprimanded civic officials over infrastructure delays, accusing them of taking commissions.
