BJP Leader Says Trump Responsible For Maharashtra Highway Delays And Alcohol Crisis

BJP leader blames Trump for Maharashtra problems

BJP leader and former Ahmednagar MP Sujay Vikhe Patil has linked delays in a highway project in Maharashtra and an increase in alcohol consumption to US President Donald Trump’s policies, arguing that disruptions in global energy supplies have affected the availability and cost of materials used for road construction. His comments have drawn attention because of the unusual connection he made between international developments and local infrastructure problems. Speaking about the Ahilyanagar-Manmad Road project in Ahilyanagar, Vikhe Patil said the contractor was facing difficulties in procuring tar, a material used in road construction.

He claimed that tar was currently unavailable locally and had to be transported from Delhi by road, significantly increasing the project’s costs. According to him, the increased expenses also require additional approvals, contributing to delays in the work. Vikhe Patil attributed the broader supply difficulties to what he described as the confusion caused by Trump’s policies. Referring to the US President, he said he had never seen “such a crazy person” and criticised what he described as contradictory actions involving military strikes and decisions to stop or resume hostilities. He argued that it would be better for India not to become involved with Trump’s actions.

Explaining the connection with the road project, Vikhe Patil pointed to disruptions in global energy markets. The argument centres on the relationship between crude oil supplies and petroleum products used in infrastructure. Bitumen, which is widely used in road construction, is produced as part of the oil refining process. Any major disruption to crude supplies or refining operations can therefore affect the availability and cost of petroleum-derived construction materials. The BJP leader also referred to the impact of the conflict involving the United States and Iran on global energy supplies. He said the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to normal traffic had contributed to disruption in the movement of oil and other energy commodities.

The waterway is a crucial route for global oil shipments, and disruptions there can affect crude supplies and energy prices internationally. Vikhe Patil further claimed that the resulting uncertainty had affected alcohol consumption among some people. “Due to the confusion caused by Trump's actions, the amount of alcohol consumed by certain people has increased,” he said. He did not provide specific data or evidence to quantify an increase in alcohol consumption or establish a direct causal relationship between Trump’s policies and drinking patterns. The BJP leader’s remarks were made in the context of local concerns over the Ahilyanagar-Manmad Road project.

He said the difficulties faced by contractors were also being experienced by residents and other stakeholders affected by the infrastructure work. According to him, the higher cost of transporting tar and the requirement for approvals over increased project expenses were among the technical issues contributing to the difficulties. The comments illustrate how international geopolitical developments can have indirect effects on infrastructure projects through global commodity and energy markets. Oil supply disruptions can influence the cost of petroleum-based products, including bitumen, while higher transportation costs can further increase the expense of moving construction materials over long distances. However, the specific reasons for the shortage and delay in the Maharashtra project would require confirmation from the relevant authorities and project agencies.

Vikhe Patil, the son of Maharashtra minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, used the issue to criticise Trump’s policies and argue that international instability can eventually affect local projects. His remarks combined concerns about global energy supplies with the practical difficulties being faced by a highway contractor in Maharashtra. The Ahilyanagar-Manmad Road project remains a local infrastructure issue, while the global energy situation is influenced by a much wider set of factors, including crude production, refining capacity, shipping routes, geopolitical tensions and international demand. The BJP leader’s comments have drawn attention to the potential link between these factors, while his claim regarding increased alcohol consumption remains an assertion for which no supporting figures were provided.
