BJP Flooded With 2,000 Ticket Seekers for Surat Civic Polls, Including 15 Couples

Over 2,000 BJP aspirants have sought tickets for Surat's 120 municipal corporation seats.

As the Bharatiya Janata Party intensifies preparations for the upcoming Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) elections, an unusual trend has emerged with around 15 couples seeking party tickets. These include former corporators, party leaders, and grassroots workers who have either applied alongside their spouses or backed their partner’s candidature. The development highlights growing internal competition within the party ahead of the civic polls. Elections for the 120-seat municipal body are scheduled to be held on April 26.

Party officials confirmed that a large number of aspirants have come forward, reflecting the high stakes associated with the elections. A team of 12 observers appointed by the state BJP unit has been stationed in Surat to evaluate applications and interact with potential candidates. These observers are tasked with collecting proposal forms and assessing the winnability and suitability of applicants. The presence of multiple couples in the race has added a unique dimension to the candidate selection process. It also underscores the intense political engagement at the local level.

By Friday, more than 2,000 individuals had applied for tickets to contest the 120 available seats, indicating stiff competition within the party ranks. The Surat Municipal Corporation remains a politically significant civic body in Gujarat, especially given its recent electoral history. In the 2021 elections, the Aam Aadmi Party emerged as the sole opposition, securing all non-BJP seats in the corporation. This marked a significant shift in the state’s political dynamics, traditionally dominated by the BJP and the Congress.

The BJP had secured a dominant victory in 2021, winning 93 out of 120 seats, while AAP won 27 seats and the Congress failed to win any. However, the political landscape evolved after the elections, with 14 AAP corporators later joining the BJP and one being suspended. This reduced AAP’s effective strength in the corporation to 13 members. These developments have further strengthened the BJP’s position in the civic body. At the same time, they have raised the stakes for the upcoming elections.

With 30 wards and four seats allocated per ward, the SMC elections are expected to witness intense campaigning and strategic candidate selection. The presence of multiple aspirants, including couples, reflects both the popularity of the party and the importance of local governance in Surat. Political observers note that ticket distribution will be a crucial factor in determining electoral outcomes. The BJP leadership is expected to carefully balance experience, loyalty, and public appeal while finalising candidates. The coming days will be key in shaping the electoral contest in one of Gujarat’s most prominent cities.
