BJP Fact Checks Rahul Gandhi's 'Economic Tsunami' Claim, Rejects Alarmist Narrative

BJP rejects Rahul Gandhi's economic warning, cites stability.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday strongly rejected Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s warning of an impending “economic tsunami,” accusing him of spreading unnecessary panic and misrepresenting the state of the Indian economy. The rebuttal came after Gandhi claimed that India was heading towards a severe economic crisis and suggested that the government could resort to imposing an Emergency-like situation to contain public anger.

Addressing an event organised by the Congress' tribal wing at the party headquarters in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi argued that India’s economic safeguards had been weakened under the BJP-led government. He said rising prices were only the beginning of a larger crisis and warned that the country could face economic challenges of an unprecedented scale. Gandhi further alleged that the mechanisms that once acted as “shock absorbers” against global economic disruptions had been dismantled, leaving India vulnerable to external pressures.

Responding to the remarks, BJP leader Amit Malviya said Gandhi’s assessment was “exactly the opposite” of the reality. In a detailed post on social media, Malviya maintained that while the global economy was facing external shocks, India remained well-positioned to withstand them. He argued that the country’s economic resilience had been strengthened over the past decade rather than weakened.

To support his claim, Malviya highlighted several economic indicators, including growing electricity consumption, rising automobile sales, increased e-way bill generation, controlled inflation, healthy foodgrain stocks and strong foreign exchange reserves. According to him, these factors demonstrate the economy’s ability to absorb shocks. He also cited government measures such as fuel excise duty reductions, support for airlines during periods of high fuel prices, and assistance provided to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The BJP leader contrasted the current situation with the period under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, pointing to episodes of high inflation, declining foreign exchange reserves and a sharp depreciation of the rupee between 2011 and 2013. Malviya argued that the Narendra Modi government had successfully navigated multiple challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, supply-chain disruptions, global interest rate hikes and volatility in energy markets.

Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on the possibility of an Emergency-like situation also drew criticism from BJP leaders and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners. Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, said the Congress remained associated with the legacy of the 1975 Emergency imposed under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Telangana BJP chief N. Ramchander Rao similarly accused the Congress of possessing an “Emergency mindset,” while reiterating the BJP’s commitment to democratic governance.
