BJP Demands Action Over Congress ‘Disrespect’ to Governor Gehlot
Opposition accuses ruling MLAs of unruly behaviour during Governor’s address in Karnataka Assembly.
Bengaluru witnessed a stormy session in the Karnataka Legislature as the Opposition BJP strongly condemned what it called blatant disrespect shown to Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot during his address to the joint session on Thursday. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R Ashoka and LoP in the Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy shot off letters to the presiding officers of both Houses, demanding strict disciplinary action against the Congress legislators involved. They described the day as one of the darkest in the state’s legislative history, alleging that ruling party members indulged in unruly, street-level conduct that violated constitutional norms, parliamentary decorum, and the dignity of the Governor’s office.
Ashoka highlighted the disruption caused during the Governor’s address, which he said was delivered as a mandated constitutional duty. He singled out Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil for setting a “disgraceful precedent” by endorsing and participating in the unruly behaviour. The BJP leader argued that such actions by a senior minister responsible for law and parliamentary affairs amounted to a complete forfeiture of moral authority, calling for his immediate removal from the post. He further criticised Congress MLC BK Hariprasad’s aggressive conduct, likening it to hooliganism and exposing the ruling party’s true political culture.
Chalavadi Narayanaswamy escalated the allegations by claiming that some Congress MLCs attempted to manhandle the Governor as he exited after the address. He stated that they blocked his path, raised slogans, and created a chaotic situation that could have turned disastrous without the prompt intervention of the Governor’s security personnel. Describing the incident as a direct assault on the Constitution, he demanded the registration of criminal cases against the responsible members, their immediate suspension from the House, and a public apology from the state government to the people of Karnataka.

The BJP’s sharp reaction follows Governor Gehlot’s brief address earlier in the day, which had already drawn criticism from Congress legislators for its brevity. The opposition framed Thursday’s events as a deliberate attempt to undermine the constitutional office and established conventions of the Legislature. The controversy has intensified political tensions in the state, with both sides trading accusations ahead of further legislative proceedings.
