BJP releases first list of nine candidates for Puducherry Assembly elections 2026 to strengthen campaign.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday released its first list of candidates for the 2026 Puducherry Legislative Assembly elections, signaling an early move to consolidate its position in the Union Territory ahead of the polls. The announcement comes as the party ramps up preparations for what is expected to be a multi-cornered electoral contest.
According to an official press release from the party’s central office, the list was finalised at a meeting of the BJP’s Central Election Committee on March 18, chaired by party leader Nitin Nabin. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior members of the committee, underscoring the strategic importance of the elections for the party.
The initial list includes candidates for nine constituencies. Senior leader A. Namassivayam has been fielded from Mannadipet, while E. Theeppaianthan will contest from the reserved Oussudu (SC) constituency. P.M.L. Kalyanasundaram has been nominated from Kalapet. Other candidates include V.P. Ramalingame from Raj Bhavan, A. Additional nominations announced are G.N.S. Rajasekaran from Thirunallar, TKSM Meenatchisundaram from Neravy–T.R. Pattinam, and A. Dineshan from Mahe. Party sources indicated that further lists covering remaining constituencies will be released in the coming days as discussions and negotiations with regional partners continue.
BJP leaders emphasized that the selection of candidates reflects a balance between experienced political figures and regional representation, aimed at strengthening the party’s electoral prospects. The early release of names is intended to give nominees sufficient time to mobilize support and build grassroots campaigns ahead of the polls.
With preparations intensifying across the Union Territory, political analysts expect the elections to be closely contested, with both national and regional parties actively engaging voters. The BJP’s early push reflects its strategic focus on consolidating its influence in Puducherry while giving its candidates a head start in the campaign season.
