BJP Ally NISHAD Party Breaks Ranks, Demands Independent Probe into UP Encounter Policy

NISHAD Party chief Sanjay Nishad demanded a probe into UP's Ghazipur encounter controversy.

The June 4 police encounter in Ghazipur, in which murder accused Kamlesh Bind was killed, has triggered a political debate in Uttar Pradesh and drawn criticism not only from opposition parties but also from within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The incident has once again brought the spotlight on the Yogi Adityanath government's encounter-based policing model, which has long been promoted as part of its tough stance against crime.

The controversy gained significance after Fisheries Minister and NISHAD Party chief Sanjay Nishad, a key BJP ally in the state, raised concerns over the incident. While stopping short of directly accusing the police of misconduct, Nishad called for an independent inquiry into the encounter and stressed the importance of following due process in criminal investigations.

Nishad's remarks have created political discomfort within the ruling alliance, as they come at a time when the government continues to defend its law-and-order record. He warned that the administration's strong “thok denge” image may not continue to generate political support if encounter cases increasingly lead to public suspicion and allegations of wrongdoing.

According to reports, questions surrounding the circumstances of Kamlesh Bind's death have fuelled demands for greater transparency. Opposition leaders have also seized on the issue, accusing the government of encouraging a policing culture that prioritizes encounters over legal procedures. The state government, however, has consistently maintained that police actions are carried out within the framework of the law.

The Ghazipur incident has now evolved into a broader discussion about accountability, due process, and public trust in law enforcement. With a senior NDA ally openly seeking an independent probe, the matter is expected to remain politically sensitive in the coming weeks, particularly as debates continue over the effectiveness and legality of encounter-driven policing in Uttar Pradesh.
