BJP Alleges Mockery Of Sanatan Culture, Seeks Case Against Leaders

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj on Saturday approached the Delhi Police seeking registration of an FIR against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Independent MP Pappu Yadav, Awadhesh Prasad and others over an Opposition protest skit held near Parliament. The complaint alleges that the performance, which focused on claims of alleged misappropriation of donations made to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, hurt religious sentiments and amounted to a mockery of Sanatan traditions.

The skit was staged on Friday near Parliament’s Makar Dwar during an Opposition demonstration demanding a discussion on allegations of “chanda chori” related to temple donations. During the performance, Pappu Yadav appeared in saffron clothing with a tilak on his forehead, portraying a priest. He carried donation boxes and an image of Lord Ram, while other Opposition MPs acted as devotees placing currency notes in the boxes.

According to the complaint submitted by Bansuri Swaraj, the performance deliberately used religious symbols, including saffron attire, the tilak, donation boxes and the image of Lord Ram, as part of a political demonstration. She alleged that the act insulted religious traditions and portrayed Hindu priests and devotees in a negative manner. The BJP MP described the performance as a “mockery of Sanatan culture” and a disrespectful act against the saint community and Indian traditions.

A BJP delegation led by Swaraj met the Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi District, and requested a fair and time-bound investigation into the matter. The delegation, which included Delhi BJP MLAs Anil Sharma and Karnail Singh along with advocate Sanket Gupta, submitted a six-page complaint seeking examination of the roles of all participants involved in the protest.

The complaint has requested the preservation and examination of CCTV footage from the Parliament complex, video recordings, photographs, media coverage and social media content related to the demonstration. It has also sought questioning of participants and witnesses to determine whether any offence was committed. The complaint cites provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act relating to alleged offences involving religious sentiments and common intention.

Pappu Yadav responded to the allegations, defending the protest and saying he was prepared to repeat such actions in support of what he described as protecting religious faith. The controversy comes after another complaint was reportedly filed against Yadav at Delhi’s Jahangirpuri Police Station over the same demonstration. Police action, if any, will depend on the examination of evidence and legal assessment of the allegations.
