BJP Accuses AAP’s Atishi of Disrespecting Guru Tegh Bahadur in Delhi Assembly

BJP demands arrest over alleged derogatory remarks on Guru Tegh Bahadur.

A fierce political confrontation has intensified in Delhi as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Leader of the Opposition Atishi of making highly offensive and disrespectful remarks against the ninth Sikh Guru, Tegh Bahadur, during a Delhi Assembly discussion on January 6, 2026, prompting demands for her immediate arrest and expulsion from the House.

The controversy originated during a special session commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, organized by the Delhi government the previous November, where BJP legislators claim Atishi used "extremely shameful, indecent, and objectionable" language that deeply wounded the sentiments of the Sikh community and violated parliamentary decorum, leading to chaotic protests and multiple adjournments of the Assembly on January 7.

Senior BJP leaders, including former MP Ramesh Bidhuri and ministers such as Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Parvesh Verma, filed a formal police complaint seeking an FIR against Atishi under sections related to hurting religious sentiments, while submitting a memorandum to Speaker Vijender Gupta demanding the cancellation of her Assembly membership and exemplary punishment, emphasizing that the issue transcends politics and concerns faith and communal harmony.

The BJP has escalated the matter nationally, with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta condemning the alleged comments as unacceptable and a delegation including Manjinder Singh Sirsa planning to visit Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar to seek guidance, alongside Sikh representatives from Rakab Ganj Sahib Gurdwara meeting the Chief Minister to express outrage over the perceived insult.

In a robust counterattack, Atishi categorically denied the allegations, posting video evidence on X claiming the BJP fabricated the controversy by circulating a doctored clip with false subtitles inserting the Guru's name, insisting her original remarks addressed the ruling party's evasion of a pollution debate and stray dog protests; Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann echoed this, accusing the BJP of being historically anti-Sikh and demanding an apology for misusing the Guru's name in divisive politics.
