#BiharPolls: Tejashwi Yadav Promises to Repeal Waqf (Amendment) Act if INDIA Bloc Wins Bihar

Tejashwi Yadav pledges to repeal the Waqf Act, accusing Nitish Kumar’s NDA of communal politics.

RJD leader and INDIA bloc chief ministerial candidate Tejashwi Prasad Yadav has pledged to repeal the Waqf (Amendment) Act if his alliance wins power in Bihar, declaring during rallies in Katihar and Kishanganj that the legislation would be “thrown into the dustbin”. Addressing Muslim-dominated Seemanchal districts, Yadav accused Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of compromising with “communal forces” and aligning with the RSS and BJP, which he branded as the “Bharat Jalao Party” for spreading hatred. He positioned the promise as part of a broader anti-NDA agenda ahead of the 2025 assembly polls.

The Waqf (Amendment) Act, passed by Parliament in April 2025, was defended by the NDA as promoting transparency and empowering backward Muslims and women, while the Opposition criticised it as an infringement on minority rights. The controversy intensified after RJD MLC Mohammad Quari Sohaib claimed on Saturday that all parliamentary and state bills, including the Waqf Act, would be “torn apart” under a Tejashwi-led government. Yadav reiterated his father Lalu Prasad’s legacy of resisting communalism, vowing to counter NDA policies perceived as discriminatory.

Yadav lambasted the 20-year Nitish Kumar administration for corruption, law-and-order collapse, and neglect of Seemanchal, promising to establish a dedicated development authority for the Nepal-bordering region. He also committed to doubling allowances for panchayati raj representatives, providing pensions, ₹50 lakh insurance coverage, and increasing margins for public distribution system workers. “The NDA copies our promises but not our ideas,” he asserted, framing the election as a battle against misgovernance and divisive politics.

As campaigning heats up, Yadav’s Waqf repeal pledge targets minority consolidation while fuelling national debate on the Act’s implications. With Seemanchal’s significant Muslim electorate pivotal, the INDIA bloc aims to capitalise on anti-incumbency, positioning itself as a defender of inclusive governance against perceived NDA overreach.
