Bihar CM Welcomes CBSE Decision To Include Maithili In School Curriculum From 2026-27
CBSE to introduce Maithili in curriculum, Bihar CM calls it historic step.
Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Monday welcomed the decision of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to include the Maithili language in its curriculum from the academic session 2026–27, calling it a historic step for the recognition of the region’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
The Chief Minister said the inclusion of Maithili as a mother-tongue subject from Class 1 through the secondary level would strengthen the identity of the Mithila region. He noted that the move would give formal academic recognition to one of Bihar’s most culturally significant languages and help preserve its use among younger generations within the school education system.
In a social media statement, Choudhary credited the development to broader efforts by the central government to promote Indian languages and traditions through education policy reforms. He also expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that initiatives under his leadership have encouraged the inclusion and preservation of regional languages in formal curricula.

The decision follows recommendations aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes early education in students’ mother tongues wherever possible. According to official communication, the inclusion was taken after consultation with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), which has been actively working on multilingual education materials across India.
Officials also pointed out that Maithili is listed among the 22 scheduled languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, further supporting its inclusion in national-level education frameworks. NCERT has already developed primers in multiple Indian languages, including Maithili, and is in the process of translating textbooks into all scheduled languages.
Education authorities confirmed that CBSE has formally integrated Maithili into its curriculum starting from the 2026–27 academic session, with the syllabus already made available on the official CBSE academic portal for schools to adopt and implement accordingly.
