Bihar CM Nitish Kumar May Resign on March 30 After Rajya Sabha Election
JD(U) urges Nitish Kumar to remain active in Bihar politics.
Amid reports that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may resign from the state legislative council on Monday, senior Janata Dal (United) leader Ashok Choudhary said a significant section of the public and party workers do not want the CM to shift focus away from state politics. Choudhary, who also heads the Rural Works Department, added that while circumstances necessitate Nitish’s move to the Rajya Sabha, the state will deeply feel his absence.
Choudhary praised Nitish as more than a political figure, describing him as the embodiment of Bihar’s development. “His distinctive working style and administrative prowess have left a profound impact across the state,” he said. Choudhary highlighted that those familiar with the CM’s tenure recognize the transformative changes he has brought to Bihar over the past 20 years.
During Nitish’s recently concluded ‘Samriddhi Yatra,’ public demand was evident for him to remain in Bihar. Choudhary noted that many urged the CM not to leave, reflecting the emotional bond between the leader and the people. The JD(U) leader said Nitish’s elevation to the Rajya Sabha marks an emotional moment for party members who have closely worked with him.

JD(U) MLC Neeraj Kumar stated that the next Bihar Chief Minister will be decided through consensus among senior leaders of JD(U) and BJP. Meanwhile, Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar clarified that members elected to another House must resign from their current membership within 14 days, meaning Nitish and BJP national president Nitin Nabin are expected to step down from their respective state houses by March 30.
JD(U) working president Sanjay Kumar Jha confirmed that Nitish would follow constitutional procedure. Sources noted that under the Constitution, a person can serve as a state chief minister for up to six months without being a member of either the assembly or legislative council, meaning Nitish could continue as CM temporarily even after resigning from the council.
Political observers, including former MP Anand Mohan Singh, suggested that the BJP could lose influence in state politics after Nitish moves to the Rajya Sabha. As the March 30 deadline approaches, uncertainty remains over whether Nitish will immediately relinquish the chief ministership or continue for a transitional period while the next leader is decided.
