Bengaluru Tenant Couple Arrested for Murder, Robbery of 65-Year-Old Landlady

Couple confesses to strangling 65-year-old Srilakshmi in Uttarahalli robbery.

Authorities in Bengaluru have arrested a tenant couple, Prasad Srishail Makai (26) and Sakshi Hanumant Hoddur (23), for the murder of their landlady, Srilakshmi (65), and the theft of her gold mangalsutra during a robbery at her residence in Uttarahalli on November 4, 2025. The couple, who resided in the victim’s home on New Millennium School Road, allegedly killed her during a planned theft that escalated into violence.

The victim was discovered deceased in the living room by a co-tenant around 5:30 p.m. after her husband, Ashwath Narayan (70), an employee at an incense stick factory in Cottonpet, raised concern over unanswered calls from 2:15 p.m. onward. He had left for work at 9:30 a.m. Upon arrival, the co-tenant found Srilakshmi with visible injuries to her neck, lips, and face, indicating strangulation and assault. Her gold mangalsutra was missing, leading police to register a case under IPC Sections 302 (murder) and 392 (robbery).

Investigation by Subramanyapura Police revealed that Srilakshmi had informed her sister, Sampati Lakshmi, around 1:00 p.m. that a young couple was at the house to “check the television.” CCTV footage and statements from neighbors helped identify the suspects. The couple, originally from rural Karnataka and facing financial difficulties, had been allowed to stay rent-free in exchange for household assistance.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime. They admitted to using a dupatta to strangle the victim after she resisted the theft attempt between 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The stolen mangalsutra was recovered from a pawn shop in Kalasipalya, along with bloodstained clothing. The couple was apprehended at a relative’s residence in Kengeri late that night.

The victim’s husband expressed profound grief, describing their 40-year marriage as one built on trust and simplicity. The local community has condemned the incident, highlighting growing concerns over tenant-landlord safety in Bengaluru’s expanding residential areas. Forensic analysis is ongoing, and police are examining the couple’s financial transactions to rule out additional involvement. The case remains under active investigation.
