Beedi On A Plane: Akasa Air Passenger Arrested After In-Flight Smoking Stunt
A Delhi passenger was booked for smoking a beedi inside the Akasa Air flight lavatory mid-journey.
Authorities in Goa have registered a case against a passenger for allegedly smoking a beedi on an Akasa Air flight from Delhi to Goa, officials said. The incident occurred on Saturday aboard flight QP1625 when the accused, identified as Ashish, a resident of Delhi, reportedly lit a hand-rolled cigarette inside the aircraft lavatory. Police and airline sources confirmed that the passenger was also found in possession of a lighter, heightening concerns over in-flight safety.
The act, officials noted, posed a potential risk to the safety of fellow passengers and crew members. Smoking on commercial flights is strictly prohibited under civil aviation regulations due to the high flammability risk and potential for fire hazards in confined cabin spaces. The airline confirmed the incident and stated that its crew followed the necessary safety protocols during the flight.
According to Akasa Air, the crew acted in accordance with established procedures and handed the individual over to authorities upon landing in Goa. “A passenger travelling on Akasa Air flight QP1625 from Delhi to Goa on March 7 was found smoking in the aircraft lavatory,” the airline said in a statement, emphasizing that full cooperation is being extended to law enforcement in the ongoing investigation.

A case has been filed at the Mopa Airport police station under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against Safety of Civil Aviation Act. Police officials confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the incident and any additional safety violations.
While the passenger’s motives remain unclear, aviation experts highlighted that even a small flame on board an aircraft can endanger lives and disrupt operations. Crew vigilance and prompt reporting are essential to mitigate such risks, and airlines routinely emphasize adherence to safety rules through in-flight announcements and regulatory compliance training.
The incident underscores the seriousness of smoking or carrying ignition sources on flights. Authorities and the airline continue to investigate the matter, and the case will likely include fines, penalties, and potential legal consequences for the passenger under Indian aviation safety laws. Passengers are reminded to comply strictly with all in-flight regulations to ensure their own safety and that of others.
