Avalanche Derails Swiss Train, Dozens Injured Near Goppenstein

Avalanche triggers train derailment in Swiss Alps; multiple passengers injured.

A train traveling through the Swiss Alps was derailed on Monday morning after an avalanche struck near the village of Goppenstein in southern Switzerland, leaving several passengers injured. Authorities confirmed that around 30 people were on board at the time of the accident.

The incident occurred at approximately 7 a.m. local time in the canton of Valais. Police shared initial updates on social media, warning of possible injuries and urging caution in the affected area. Rescue operations were immediately launched by local authorities.

The train involved was a RegioExpress on the RE1 line, which runs between Bern and Brig. The derailment took place in the Stockgraben Tunnel, located between Goppenstein and Hohtenn, beyond the Lotschberg Tunnel.

The train had departed from Spiez at 6:12 a.m., and the derailment disrupted services on the busy regional route. BLS, the route operator, reported that emergency teams were dispatched to stabilize the situation and evacuate passengers safely.

Authorities are investigating the extent of the injuries and the damage caused by the derailment. Initial reports suggest no fatalities, but several passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

The Swiss railway network has issued advisories about delays and alternative routes, while avalanche control and rescue teams continue to monitor the surrounding mountains to prevent further incidents.
