Atishi Urges Amit Shah to Act on Rising Crime and Police Lapses in Delhi

Atishi writes to Amit Shah seeking urgent action on Delhi's deteriorating law and order.

In a strong warning to the Union Government, Delhi Assembly Opposition Leader Atishi has written to Home Minister Amit Shah, highlighting the rapidly deteriorating law and order situation in the national capital. The letter details a string of serious criminal incidents, emphasizing the growing fear among residents and the urgent need for improved policing and accountability. Atishi requested a personal meeting with the Home Minister to discuss concrete measures to restore public confidence.

Atishi cited the murder of Rachna Yadav, an RWA president and Aam Aadmi Party worker, who was shot in broad daylight near the residence of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Yadav, who was set to testify in her husband’s murder case, was targeted despite being in a supposedly secure area, highlighting significant security lapses in VIP zones.

The Opposition leader also referenced a deadly terrorist attack near the Red Fort in November 2025, which killed 13 people and injured several others. She argued that such incidents in high-profile locations raise serious national security concerns, showing that no part of Delhi is immune to violence or attacks.

Atishi pointed out police misconduct and weak accountability, including a December 2025 incident where a constable allegedly tried to molest a woman, only to be caught by the public. She also highlighted multiple firing incidents on the night of January 13-14, 2026, in areas like Paschim Vihar and Prem Nagar, which caused widespread panic due to delayed police response and inadequate investigations.

Highlighting the vulnerability of women, senior citizens, and ordinary residents, Atishi cited a September 2025 rape case in a posh area and warned that even traditionally “safe” neighborhoods are no longer secure. She stressed that Delhi’s safety is a national concern, urging the Home Minister to implement urgent corrective measures to restore law, order, and public trust.
