Assam Polls: Kharge Targets Women and Healthcare in Congress’s 5-Point Agenda

Congress promises cash, healthcare and land rights in Assam.

Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday unveiled the Indian National Congress party’s “five guarantees” for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, outlining a welfare-focused agenda. Addressing a rally in Naoboicha in Lakhimpur district, Kharge emphasised schemes aimed at women, healthcare access, land rights, and justice-related concerns.

The announcement marks a key step in the party’s campaign strategy in the poll-bound state. It signals a push to consolidate voter support through targeted promises. The guarantees are positioned as part of a broader social welfare framework. The move comes amid intensifying political competition in Assam.

A major highlight of the guarantees is a proposed monthly cash transfer scheme for women. Kharge also promised an additional ₹50,000 financial assistance for women looking to start or expand businesses. He stated that the scheme would be unconditional, distinguishing it from existing welfare initiatives. The proposal aims to empower women economically and encourage entrepreneurship. It is expected to appeal strongly to women voters across the state. The party has placed women-centric policies at the core of its campaign.

The Congress leader also promised healthcare access for all, focusing on strengthening public health systems. Land rights and social justice were highlighted as key areas requiring attention. Kharge additionally referred to justice in the Zubeen Garg death case as part of the party’s commitments. These issues were presented as part of a comprehensive governance agenda. The party aims to address both economic and social concerns of the electorate. The guarantees reflect an attempt to broaden its appeal across different sections.

During his address, Kharge sharply criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Assam. He accused it of widespread corruption and alleged that it was functioning to benefit its leaders and their families. The remarks underline the confrontational tone of the campaign. Political exchanges between major parties are expected to intensify further. The criticism forms a central part of Congress’s electoral messaging. It seeks to position the party as an alternative to the current regime.

The announcement of the “five guarantees” underscores the growing focus on welfare-driven electoral strategies in Indian politics. As the campaign gathers momentum, parties are competing to present voter-centric promises. The coming weeks will see increased outreach efforts and political rallies across Assam. The effectiveness of these guarantees will depend on voter response and campaign execution. The election is expected to witness a closely contested battle. All eyes remain on how these promises shape the political narrative.
