Assam Poll Row: Candidate’s Mother Files Complaint Against Himanta Sarma
Complaint alleges false claims targeting candidate’s family during Assam polls.
The mother of an Assam Jatiya Parishad candidate has filed a defamation complaint against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that he made false and misleading statements during the ongoing election campaign.
Sujata Gurung Chowdhury, whose daughter Kunki Chowdhury is contesting from the Guwahati Central constituency, approached the National Commission for Women with a formal complaint. She claimed that the remarks made by the Chief Minister were defamatory and had subjected her to public scrutiny and online harassment.
In her complaint, Chowdhury stated that she is a private individual with no direct involvement in politics and was drawn into controversy solely because of her daughter’s candidature. She alleged that the statements made against her were “false, baseless and malicious,” and were intended to damage her reputation and influence the electoral environment.

The complaint further accused Sarma of making claims during a public campaign that linked her to anti-national sentiments, including alleged sympathies for Pakistan and actions that could hurt religious sentiments. Chowdhury also objected to the use of an image presented publicly, which she said was misleading and misrepresented her actions.
The issue has triggered a political controversy in Assam, with opposition voices raising concerns about the tone of campaign rhetoric and its impact on individuals not directly involved in electoral politics. The complaint has also highlighted the role of social media amplification in escalating such disputes, particularly during election periods.
As of now, there has been no official response from the Chief Minister regarding the complaint. The matter is expected to be examined by the NCW, and further developments could depend on the commission’s findings and any subsequent legal or political action.
