Assam Parties Demand Single-Phase 2026 Assembly Elections

Political parties in Assam urge EC to hold 2026 Assembly polls in one or two phases, avoiding Bihu festival dates.

Ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, held detailed consultations with recognised national and state political parties in Guwahati on Tuesday. The meeting forms part of the Election Commission’s early preparations to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process in the state.

Senior officials of the Election Commission of India and the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam were also present. The interaction focused on gathering inputs from stakeholders regarding polling arrangements, voter participation, security deployment and logistical challenges that may arise during the Assembly elections scheduled for 2026.

Representatives from major national parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party, Indian National Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Communist Party of India (Marxist) participated in the discussions. Among the state parties present were the All India United Democratic Front, Asom Gana Parishad, Bodoland People’s Front and United People’s Party Liberal.

A majority of the parties urged the Commission to conduct the elections in a single phase or, at most, in two phases, citing administrative convenience and the need to maximise voter turnout. Leaders argued that a shorter election schedule would reduce strain on security forces and streamline logistical arrangements across constituencies.

Several parties also requested that the poll dates be finalised with due consideration to the Bihu festival, a culturally significant celebration in Assam. They emphasised that aligning the schedule appropriately would prevent disruptions to traditional festivities and encourage higher voter participation.

The Commission assured all stakeholders that their suggestions would be carefully examined before finalising the election schedule. Reiterating its commitment to free, fair, inclusive and violence-free elections, the Commission stated that the Model Code of Conduct and constitutional principles would be strictly upheld when the poll dates for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections are announced in the coming weeks.
