The government and the Opposition remained locked in a standoff on Monday after a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) failed to resolve differences over the parliamentary agenda. The Centre agreed to a detailed discussion on student protests, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah expected to respond to the debate, but Opposition parties continued to insist that allegations concerning corruption and mismanagement linked to Ram temple donations should also be discussed before normal proceedings resume. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said after the BAC meeting that the government had agreed to what he described as the Opposition's demand for a comprehensive discussion on the student agitation.
He said Shah would not merely make a statement but would respond to the entire debate, including the points raised by members during the discussion. The government urged the Opposition to accept the offer and allow Parliament to function. “Rahul Gandhi had demanded that Home Minister Amit Shah make a statement in Parliament regarding the student protests.
We have made it very clear that Home Minister Amit Shah will not only make a statement but also respond to the entire debate and discussion,” Rijiju said. He added that the government was prepared to address “every single point” raised by MPs during the discussion, presenting the arrangement as a response to the Opposition's demand for accountability from the Home Minister.
The dispute, however, extends beyond the issue of student protests. The Opposition has insisted that Parliament should also take up allegations of corruption and mismanagement involving donations to the Ram temple trust. Opposition parties have maintained that agreement on the student protest debate alone is insufficient to end the deadlock and have sought parliamentary time to raise questions over the handling of temple-related donations. Rijiju said the government had made its position clear and urged the Opposition not to continue disrupting parliamentary proceedings. “We have made our offer,” he said.

The minister also claimed that there were differences between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, suggesting that the two Opposition parties needed to resolve their differences over the parliamentary strategy. The continuing disagreement has kept the focus on the BAC, which is responsible for helping determine the business and discussion schedule of Parliament.
While the Centre's willingness to have Shah reply to the student protest debate could potentially address one of the Opposition's key demands, the refusal to immediately accommodate the Ram temple trust issue has prevented the two sides from reaching a broader agreement. The student protests have emerged as a significant political issue, with Opposition parties demanding answers from the government over the concerns raised by students.
The demand for Shah to make a statement and respond to the debate has been repeatedly raised by the Opposition, while the government's latest position is that the Home Minister will provide a comprehensive response rather than simply issue a brief statement. The stalemate therefore remains unresolved despite the Centre's latest offer.
The government is seeking to move ahead with a detailed debate on the student protests, while the Opposition wants the Ram temple trust allegations included in Parliament's agenda. Until the two sides reach an understanding on the competing demands, the functioning of the Houses is likely to remain a point of political confrontation.
