Amit Shah Launches Rs 330 Crore Projects to Resolve Ahmedabad's Long-Standing Drainage Issues

Amit Shah inaugurates Rs 330 crore civic projects in Ahmedabad, including key Western Trunk Main drainage system.

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for civic development projects worth ₹330 crore in Ahmedabad, marking a major step forward in the city’s urban infrastructure journey. The projects, implemented by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), were unveiled in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other senior leaders.

A key highlight of the event was the inauguration of the long-pending Western Trunk Main Line drainage project, a crucial initiative designed to address chronic sewage and wastewater issues in western and south-western Ahmedabad. The project is expected to provide a permanent drainage solution for nearly 15 lakh residents across multiple rapidly urbanising localities.

Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah described the occasion as modest in scale but deeply meaningful. Recalling the devastating 1973 Sabarmati floods, he noted that 173 affected families have finally received legal ownership certificates for their residential plots after nearly five decades. He called the move a historic and emotionally significant moment for the rehabilitated families.

The Union Minister highlighted how rapid urban expansion between 2000 and 2005 had outpaced infrastructure development, leaving large parts of the city without a systematic drainage network. Under central schemes such as AMRUT, large RCC pipelines ranging from 1,200 mm to 1,800 mm have been laid at an estimated cost of nearly ₹400 crore, ensuring long-term relief from sewage overflow.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said that 2025 would be remembered as a landmark year for Ahmedabad’s development and global recognition. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to ensuring basic necessities such as housing and civic amenities for every citizen, adding that Ahmedabad is on track to emerge as a hub for international sporting events.

The CM also announced a 40 per cent increase in the urban development budget to ₹30,000 crore and declared 2025 as the “Year of Urban Development.” Ahmedabad Mayor Pratibha Jain thanked both leaders for their continued support, stating that these projects reflect compassionate governance and will significantly enhance the city’s quality of life, environmental sustainability, and urban resilience.
