Amit Shah Assures Tribal Communities Over Uniform Civil Code Concerns
Amit Shah says UCC will not affect tribal communities.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday assured tribal communities that the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would not affect their customs, traditions or cultural practices in any way. Addressing a tribal conclave organised at the Red Fort grounds to mark the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of tribal icon Birsa Munda, Shah accused certain groups of spreading misinformation and fear regarding the proposed law.
Speaking at the Janjati Sanskritik Samagam organised by Janjati Suraksha Manch, Shah said BJP-ruled states implementing the UCC had already ensured special provisions keeping tribal communities outside its ambit. He asserted that the Narendra Modi government would not impose any provision of the UCC on tribal or Vanvasi communities and urged people not to fall for what he described as a “conspiracy” aimed at creating confusion among tribal populations.
“A conspiracy has now begun claiming that the Uniform Civil Code will deprive tribal communities of their culture, traditions and their right to live according to their customs,” Shah said during his address. He appealed to community leaders and residents to spread awareness in villages, forests and hill regions, emphasising that there was “no need to fear” the proposed legislation. According to Shah, tribal traditions and ways of life would remain fully protected under any future legal framework.

The home minister also spoke extensively about Naxalism, claiming that the Modi government had effectively eliminated the decades-old insurgency that had affected several tribal regions across the country. He said violence linked to Naxalism had severely hindered the development of tribal communities over the years and resulted in the deaths of thousands of tribal people. Shah stated that the country was now moving toward becoming fully free of the Naxal problem, paving the way for rapid development in tribal areas.
During the event, Shah also addressed the issue of religious conversions in tribal regions, saying that no individual should be induced or forced to change their religion through greed or coercion. He said the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to live according to their original faith and traditions. The minister further highlighted the Modi government’s welfare initiatives for tribal communities, claiming that the budget allocation for tribal welfare had increased from Rs 28,000 crore under previous governments to Rs 1.5 lakh crore under the current administration.
Shah additionally credited the BJP with prioritising tribal representation and welfare, citing the election of Droupadi Murmu as the country’s President as a landmark moment for tribal society. He described the gathering as a “Mahakumbh of tribal communities” and said it represented the largest tribal movement since Birsa Munda’s historic Ulgulan movement. According to Shah, the mobilisation of tribal communities around identity, culture and tradition would help strengthen both tribal society and the nation as a whole.
