ALPA Writes to DGCA Rejecting FDTL Waivers After Air India, Akasa Pilot Deaths

ALPA seeks strict FDTL enforcement after two pilots' deaths.

The Air Line Pilots’ Association India has urged the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to halt any relaxation of Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms, following the reported deaths of two pilots within a week, raising serious concerns over fatigue and working conditions in the aviation sector.

In its communication to the regulator, ALPA India highlighted the potential link between pilot fatigue and demanding duty schedules, arguing that any dilution of FDTL rules could exacerbate health risks for flight crew. The association called for stricter enforcement of existing norms instead of easing them, stressing that safety must remain paramount in aviation operations.

Flight Duty Time Limitations are designed to regulate the number of hours pilots can operate flights, mandating adequate rest periods to prevent fatigue-related errors. Industry experts have long maintained that adherence to these norms is critical for ensuring both crew well-being and passenger safety.

The appeal comes amid ongoing discussions within the aviation sector regarding adjustments to FDTL guidelines, aimed at improving operational flexibility for airlines. However, pilot bodies have consistently opposed such moves, warning that extended duty hours without sufficient rest could lead to burnout and increase the risk of incidents.

ALPA India also called for a comprehensive review of pilot working conditions, including roster planning and mental health support, in light of the recent fatalities. The association emphasized the need for data-driven policymaking and transparent investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The DGCA has yet to issue an official response to the latest request. As the debate continues, the issue has brought renewed focus on balancing operational efficiency with safety and human factors in India’s rapidly growing aviation industry.
