Akhilesh Yadav Questions BJP’s Economic Claims, Raises Noida Wage Issue

Akhilesh Yadav questions BJP claims, highlights low wages in Noida.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led governments at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh, questioning their claims of transforming the state into a trillion-dollar economy while highlighting concerns over low wages for workers in industrial hubs like Noida.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Yadav said that despite repeated assertions of rapid economic growth under the “double-engine government” model, the benefits have not reached the working class. He pointed out that minimum wages in Noida remain among the lowest in the country and asked what measures were being taken to address the issue.

The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister also questioned the lack of significant wage growth despite claims of increased investment and development in the state. He alleged that the government’s policies appear to favour select groups, suggesting that broader sections of workers are being left behind in the economic growth narrative.

Yadav’s remarks come amid ongoing political exchanges between the opposition and the BJP over employment, inflation and labour welfare in Uttar Pradesh. The Samajwadi Party has repeatedly raised concerns about job creation and the condition of workers, particularly in key industrial regions such as Noida.

Meanwhile, a Samajwadi Party delegation visited the DND Flyway in Noida earlier in the day, where workers have been staging protests over alleged wage-related issues. The site witnessed heavy police deployment, and several members of the delegation, including Leader of Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Mata Prasad Pandey, were detained by authorities.

Pandey said the party leaders had gone to express solidarity with workers facing alleged exploitation and non-payment of wages. He accused the state government of ignoring workers’ grievances and resorting to force, including detentions and police action, when they attempted to raise their concerns.
