Akhilesh Yadav Criticises PM Modi’s Austerity Appeal, Calls It Admission Of Failure

Akhilesh Yadav criticises Centre’s austerity appeal, alleging economic mismanagement and widening policy contradictions.

Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on Monday launched a sharp attack on the central government, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal for austerity measures amid global uncertainty as an “admission of failure.” His remarks came in response to the Prime Minister’s call for reduced foreign exchange expenditure and greater economic discipline in the wake of geopolitical tensions.

In a post on X, Yadav alleged that the government had suddenly begun speaking about a “crisis” only after elections were concluded. He claimed that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) itself was responsible for the country’s current challenges, stating that there was only one major crisis and, in his words, “its name is BJP.” He further questioned the timing and intent behind the government’s public appeal for restraint in spending.

Yadav also criticised the government’s economic strategy, arguing that repeated calls for austerity would make it difficult to achieve India’s long-term growth targets, including the goal of becoming a five trillion dollar economy. He alleged that the weakening rupee and rising dollar value reflected poor economic management and suggested that financial stability was deteriorating under the current administration.

Targeting the government’s appeal to avoid non-essential spending such as gold purchases and foreign travel, the SP chief said such advice should be directed at political leaders rather than ordinary citizens. He alleged that common people were already unable to afford such luxuries, while those in power continued to enjoy privileges. He further claimed that discussions around black money and gold accumulation among ruling party figures warranted scrutiny.

He also raised questions over political conduct during election campaigns, pointing to the use of chartered flights and extensive travel by leaders. Yadav argued that if austerity was truly a concern, similar restraint should have been demonstrated during electoral activities. He accused the ruling party of applying different standards to the public and those in power.

Concluding his remarks, Yadav blamed the central government’s foreign and domestic policies for the current economic situation, alleging a departure from India’s traditional non-aligned approach. He said rising inflation, unemployment, and economic distress were affecting all sections of society and accused the BJP of failing in both governance and foreign policy, calling the Prime Minister’s appeal a reflection of deeper administrative shortcomings.
