AIADMK to Vijay: Aren't You Responsible for 41 Deaths in Karur Stampede?

AIADMK hits back at Vijay, holding him responsible for Karur stampede that killed 41.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Monday launched a sharp attack on Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder Vijay, accusing him of moral and political responsibility for the deaths of 41 people in the Karur stampede last year. The remarks came hours after Vijay described the AIADMK as a “corrupt force” during a political address.

The AIADMK criticised Vijay’s handling of the aftermath of the Karur incident, alleging what it termed “narcissistic behaviour” and a lack of accountability. The party questioned his decision to bring victims’ families to Chennai instead of visiting them in Karur, calling it an unprecedented and arrogant approach to expressing condolences.

In a strongly worded statement, the AIADMK alleged that Vijay avoided public life for weeks following the incident due to fear of legal action. The party claimed that his absence and the temporary closure of his party office reflected a lack of courage, directly contradicting his political image as a “warrior.”

Responding to Vijay’s allegation that the AIADMK had acted as a “slave to the Centre,” the party rejected the claim outright. It asserted that safeguarding Tamil Nadu’s rights and welfare has always been central to the AIADMK’s political legacy, emphasising its history of confronting the Union government when state interests were at stake.

The AIADMK also took aim at Vijay’s corruption allegations, accusing the actor of allegedly earning large sums through black-market ticket sales during his film career. It argued that by his own definition of corruption, such actions would make him culpable, not the AIADMK.

Vijay, whose TVK is preparing for its electoral debut in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and has not yet announced any alliance, has positioned his party against both the ruling DMK and the AIADMK. The political exchange comes as the 51-year-old superstar remains under CBI investigation in connection with the Karur stampede, for which he has reportedly been questioned twice in Delhi, adding further intensity to the unfolding political confrontation.
