AIADMK Set To Advance Working Committee Meeting As EPS Reviews Organisation

The opposition AIADMK is preparing to hold its Working Committee meeting earlier than its usual schedule, with party General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) expected to focus on organisational strengthening, resolving internal differences, and preparing the party for upcoming local body elections. The meeting is likely to take place in August, several months ahead of the party’s traditional December schedule.

According to party sources, the move comes after the AIADMK faced organisational challenges following its defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Recognised political parties are required by the Election Commission of India to conduct General Council meetings annually and Working Committee meetings twice a year. The AIADMK has generally combined both meetings towards the end of the year, but the leadership is now considering an earlier gathering.

Since June 13, Palaniswami has been conducting review meetings with district-level office-bearers to analyse the party’s performance and assess its organisational readiness. The consultations, which concluded on July 25, covered all 85 organisational districts of the AIADMK, with the party chief reportedly monitoring participation and taking note of leaders who were absent.

Several senior AIADMK leaders, including former ministers S.P. Velumani, Natham Viswanathan, C.V. Shanmugam and P. Thangamani, reportedly did not attend the review meetings. Some MLAs, including Arunmozhi Devan, Sukumar, and Rakesh, were also absent. Party sources indicated that the leadership may seek explanations from office-bearers who failed to participate.

The upcoming Working Committee meeting is expected to discuss internal issues, including concerns involving leaders considered dissatisfied with the current leadership. Palaniswami is likely to hold discussions with such members to resolve differences, while those unwilling to cooperate could face disciplinary action. The party is also planning to fill vacant organisational positions as part of a restructuring exercise.

Local body elections are expected to be a major focus of the meeting, with Palaniswami aiming to strengthen the party’s grassroots network. During the district consultations, he reportedly urged leaders to improve performance in civic polls and encouraged senior functionaries to take active roles in local elections. The Working Committee meeting is likely to finalise organisational changes and prepare a roadmap for AIADMK’s future electoral strategy.
