AIADMK Initiates Reconciliation Efforts Amid Ongoing Internal Factional Dispute
AIADMK factions begin talks to resolve internal leadership dispute.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has begun renewed reconciliation efforts amid signs of easing tensions between the party’s leadership and rebel factions, following recent political developments in Tamil Nadu. According to party insiders, informal dialogue channels have been activated as both sides explore the possibility of restoring organisational unity after months of internal disagreement and factional activity.
The latest push for reconciliation comes after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay completed his Cabinet expansion by inducting representatives from alliance partners VCK and IUML. Political observers suggest this move has altered the internal dynamics within opposition politics in the state, prompting dissident AIADMK leaders to reassess their positions. The expansion is seen as strengthening the ruling alliance while indirectly increasing pressure on the opposition to consolidate.
Within the AIADMK, discussions are reportedly being facilitated through informal “negotiation teams” comprising senior leaders and trusted intermediaries. These backchannel efforts are aimed at bridging the gap between the faction led by AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) and rebel leaders associated with C. Ve. Shanmugam and S. P. Velumani. Sources indicate that both sides have shown willingness to engage, although conditions for settlement remain a key sticking point.

The EPS camp is said to have insisted that the rebel faction withdraw its petition filed before the Election Commission of India under Paragraph 15 of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968. In response, dissident leaders are reportedly demanding reinstatement of party functionaries removed during recent disciplinary actions before any formal reconciliation can take place. While the dispute had previously escalated to the poll panel, leaders from the rebel group have indicated that the petition could be withdrawn if a mutual understanding is reached.
The internal friction had intensified after sections of the rebel camp approached the Election Commission over disputes within the party structure. However, leaders close to the faction clarified that there was no intention to seek freezing of the AIADMK’s “Two Leaves” symbol, and described the move as part of ongoing negotiations rather than a definitive break. Party sources also noted that the recent Cabinet expansion has added urgency to reconciliation talks as both camps reassess political strategy ahead of upcoming electoral challenges.
Meanwhile, senior leader S. P. Velumani has publicly stated that there is no formal split within the party and has called for introspection following the AIADMK’s recent electoral performance. Political observers are closely watching whether these reconciliation efforts will translate into a formal reunification process, which could significantly reshape the opposition landscape in Tamil Nadu.
