Actor-Politician Vijay Faces CBI Questioning in Delhi Over 41-Death Karur Stampede

TVK Chief and actor Vijay arrives at the CBI office in Delhi for questioning in the Karur stampede probe that killed 41 people during a party event in September 2025.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor-turned-politician Vijay reached the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in the national capital on Monday in connection with the ongoing probe into the Karur stampede case, which claimed 41 lives during a political campaign event in September 2025.

Vijay, who is currently staying at a hotel in Central Delhi, is expected to be questioned by CBI officials about the circumstances leading to the tragedy. The agency is examining his role and responsibilities as part of a wider effort to reconstruct the sequence of events that unfolded during the campaign programme in Karur district.

According to sources, the CBI’s questioning is focused on the planning and management of the event, crowd control arrangements, and the timeline on September 27, 2025, when the stampede occurred. Investigators are also seeking clarity on decisions taken before and during the gathering that may have contributed to the incident.

The CBI had already conducted a detailed round of questioning of Vijay last week as part of the same investigation. Officials indicated that the inquiry remains at a crucial stage, with investigators analysing witness statements, video footage, and other documentary evidence linked to the case.

The central agency took over the investigation from the Tamil Nadu Police in October 2025 following directions from the Supreme Court. The apex court had ordered a CBI probe, citing the gravity of the incident and the large number of casualties involved.

The Karur stampede, which occurred during a TVK campaign event, triggered widespread outrage and raised serious questions about crowd management and safety at political gatherings. The ongoing probe aims to establish accountability and determine whether lapses or negligence contributed to the deadly incident.
