Abhishek Banerjee Summoned In CID Investigation Over Alleged Forged Signature
CID seeks Abhishek Banerjee's response in signature forgery case.
Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the All India Trinamool Congress, has been summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for questioning on June 1 in connection with an alleged forged-signature case. The development marks a fresh legal challenge for the senior party leader and nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The probe relates to allegations that the signatures of several TMC legislators were forged in a letter nominating Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the preparation and submission of the document and the authenticity of the signatures it contained.
According to officials, the CID has sought Banerjee's appearance as part of its ongoing investigation into the matter. The agency is expected to question him regarding the nomination letter and any information that may assist in determining how the alleged forgery occurred. Authorities have not publicly disclosed further details about the scope of the inquiry.

The summons comes at a time when Banerjee is already facing scrutiny in another matter related to alleged illegal construction. While the two cases are unrelated, the latest development adds to the legal and political pressures surrounding one of the TMC's most prominent leaders.
On May 26, police officers visited Banerjee's residence in connection with the forged-signature investigation. The move prompted a strong response from the ruling party, which accused political opponents of using investigative agencies to target its leaders. TMC representatives described the action as politically motivated and part of a broader campaign against the party.
The case is likely to generate further political debate in West Bengal, where relations between the TMC and its rivals remain highly contentious. As the investigation progresses, attention will focus on the findings of the CID and whether any additional individuals are questioned or implicated in the alleged forgery of the nomination document.
