Abhishek Banerjee Reports Alleged Arson In Khejuri Raises Law And Order Concerns

Abhishek Banerjee alleges arson in Khejuri and questions law and order in West Bengal.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday alleged that BJP “miscreants” set nearly 10 shops on fire in the Khejuri area of East Midnapore district, escalating political tensions in West Bengal following the formation of a new BJP-led state government. He claimed that the incident reflects growing political violence in the region.

In a post on X, Banerjee alleged that the fire broke out in the Jonka Gram Panchayat area of West Bhangan Mari, where several shops were allegedly torched during the night. He claimed that the incident occurred in the presence of police personnel and accused law enforcement agencies of failing to intervene in time to prevent damage. According to him, the attack destroyed livelihoods and left families economically devastated.

Banerjee further escalated his criticism by targeting the BJP leadership, alleging that violence and intimidation were being used as political tools in the state. He accused the ruling party of fostering an environment where targeted attacks and fear-driven politics were becoming increasingly common, and suggested that such incidents were being carried out with impunity.

He also questioned the role of central agencies and raised concerns over the deployment and effectiveness of Central Forces in the state. In his remarks, he asked whether such forces were acting impartially or being used selectively, and urged accountability from the Union government over the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Bengal.

Extending his criticism, Banerjee directly referenced Union Home Minister Amit Shah, questioning his response to the alleged violence. He argued that if incidents of arson and intimidation could occur openly, it reflected a breakdown of governance and public safety. He described the situation as a warning sign of worsening political conditions in the state.

The allegations come amid heightened political activity in West Bengal following a recent shift in power. The BJP, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, recently formed the government after winning a majority in the 2026 Assembly elections. The new administration has begun implementing early policy and administrative changes, while political tensions between the BJP and TMC continue to intensify over governance and law-and-order issues.
