Abhishek Banerjee Approaches Calcutta High Court Against CID Summons In MLA Case
TMC leader seeks court protection against CID summons.
Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has moved the Calcutta High Court challenging summons issued by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police in connection with a signature mismatch case involving party legislators. The petition was filed before a single-judge vacation bench seeking protection from coercive action, including arrest, as the investigation into the alleged irregularities continues to unfold.
The case pertains to reported discrepancies in the signatures of several Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs on a resolution related to the nomination of party legislators to key positions in the West Bengal Assembly. These positions are traditionally allocated to members of the opposition bench, making the procedural validity of the submitted document a matter of administrative and legal scrutiny within the Assembly.
The Calcutta High Court, presided over by Justice Apurba Sinha Roy, has admitted Banerjee’s petition. The matter is scheduled for hearing on Friday, with the court considering his request for protection from any coercive steps by the investigating agency. The CID had earlier issued summons directing him to appear for interrogation as part of its ongoing inquiry into the alleged irregularities.

According to the sequence of events outlined in official communications, Abhishek Banerjee was initially summoned by the CID on June 1. However, he sought a 15-day deferment, citing health concerns following an alleged assault incident in South 24 Parganas on May 30. Later the same day, the CID issued a second notice requiring his appearance on June 8, intensifying the legal timeline surrounding the case.
The situation has gained further political complexity as June 8 coincides with Banerjee’s scheduled visit to New Delhi alongside West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for a meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc. Meanwhile, administrative procedures within the state Assembly have also been affected after concerns were raised regarding the authenticity of signatures on the submitted resolution.
The controversy escalated after two TMC legislators, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, flagged alleged inconsistencies in the signatures to the Assembly Speaker’s office. Following their complaints, the Assembly secretariat transferred the matter to the CID for investigation, triggering the summons to Banerjee and deepening the political tensions within the ruling party’s state unit. The case is now being closely watched for its legal and political implications as proceedings move to the High Court.
