1.25 Cr Illegal Voters in Bengal? BJP’s Bold Claim!
Suvendu Adhikari Alleges Massive Voter Fraud, TMC Demands Proof
In a provocative statement, West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, claimed on Saturday that 1.25 crore illegal immigrants, primarily Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, are registered on the state’s voters’ list. Speaking at a programme in Tamluk, Purba Medinipur, the BJP leader vowed that a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls would remove these names, ensuring they are “pushed back.” He reassured Hindus who migrated due to religious persecution that they would be unaffected.
Adhikari also accused the state government of enabling false voting and corruption, warning government officers to act impartially or face consequences. “The SIR will end fake voting and expose the state’s misdeeds,” he declared, citing Bihar’s removal of 50 lakh names as a precedent.
The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) swiftly dismissed Adhikari’s claims as divisive rhetoric meant to polarize voters before elections. TMC spokesperson Debangshu Bhattacharya challenged the BJP to submit the alleged list of 1.25 crore illegal voters to the Election Commission, questioning Adhikari’s ability to identify them. “Does he even know what a Rohingya is?” Bhattacharya quipped.

The TMC alleged the SIR is a ploy to disenfranchise opposition supporters, including both Hindus and Muslims, drawing parallels to similar exercises in Bihar targeting RJD voters. “Bengalis, regardless of religion, are united by language and identity. This won’t work here,” Bhattacharya asserted.
The controversy underscores the escalating political tensions in West Bengal as both parties gear up for a contentious electoral battle, with voter lists at the center of the debate.
