Rahul Gandhi Criticises Centre Over FIR Against Woman For Alleged Abuse Of PM

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Thursday criticised the Centre over the registration of an FIR against a 25-year-old woman accused of using abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar. Gandhi alleged that the government was attempting to suppress the voices of young people and warned against what he described as efforts to intimidate Generation Z through legal action.
In a post on X, Gandhi said the Modi government could not silence the younger generation through threats or police action. Addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, he claimed that students had already faced harsh treatment and were now being subjected to FIRs and social media account restrictions. He urged the government to exercise caution in its approach towards young citizens, describing them as India's future.
The FIR relates to remarks allegedly made by Ruchika Singh during the July 23 protest at Jantar Mantar. A complaint filed on Wednesday alleged that her comments insulted the dignity of the Prime Minister's office and had the potential to disturb public peace and promote disharmony. A Zero FIR was initially registered at the Expressway Police Station in Noida before being transferred to the Parliament Street Police Station in New Delhi for further investigation.

The Cockroach Janta Party also criticised the police action, while acknowledging that the language used by Singh could be considered inappropriate. CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said any person aggrieved by allegedly defamatory remarks has the option to pursue civil or criminal defamation proceedings, but argued that deploying criminal law against protesters was excessive. He also appealed to young people to exercise restraint in their choice of words while urging the police not to misuse legal powers for political purposes.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government announced that no legal action would be taken against those arrested during the recent protests, except individuals with a criminal history. The decision addressed one of the key demands raised by the Cockroach Janta Party during its agitation. Following the government's assurance, the organisation called off its online protest, while the FIR against Ruchika Singh continues to remain under police investigation.
