Leh Airport Upgrade Inaugurated to Boost Tourism and Connectivity
L-G Kavinder Gupta inaugurates upgraded civil aviation facilities at Leh IAF station to improve connectivity and tourism.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, on Wednesday inaugurated a key civil aviation infrastructure project at the Indian Air Force (IAF) station in Leh. The project aims to strengthen air connectivity in the region and provide a boost to tourism and economic activity in Ladakh, officials said.
The upgraded infrastructure will allow smoother aircraft ground movement and faster civil flight departures, significantly reducing turnaround time. Officials from the Ministry of Defence stated that the improvements are expected to enhance passenger convenience while ensuring more efficient airport operations in the high-altitude region.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior Indian Air Force officials, including Air Marshal J.S. Mann, Senior Air Staff Officer of the Western Air Command. Authorities described the project as a milestone reflecting strong coordination between the civil administration and defence agencies working toward Ladakh’s development.

According to officials, the infrastructure upgrade was completed in record time despite extreme weather conditions and challenging terrain. Improved air connectivity is expected to generate employment, strengthen local livelihoods, and encourage increased tourist inflow to the Leh sector.
The Defence Ministry noted that the enhanced facilities will also improve Ladakh’s preparedness for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations. Reliable air services will support both residents and visitors while contributing to the region’s long-term socio-economic growth.
Separately, L-G Gupta highlighted internal security concerns, warning that “white-collar militancy” continues to pose challenges despite significant progress in curbing extremism. He credited the Centre’s efforts under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and stressed that India’s security agencies remain vigilant against external and internal threats.
