#BreakingNews: Farooq Abdullah Attacked; Suspect Claims 20-Year Wait Due to Personal Grudge
Attacker confesses 20-year personal grudge against Farooq Abdullah.
National Conference President and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on March 11, 2026, when a gunman fired at him from point-blank range during a wedding ceremony in Jammu's Greater Kailash area. The 88-year-old leader, accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, was leaving the event at Royal Park when the attacker approached and discharged a shot. Abdullah's close protection team, including NSG personnel, swiftly intervened, deflecting the bullet and overpowering the suspect, ensuring no injuries occurred.
The accused, identified as 63-year-old Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi in Jammu, was arrested immediately after the incident. Police confirmed that the firearm used was a licensed personal weapon belonging to Jamwal. During initial interrogation, Jamwal reportedly stated that he had been planning the attack for the past 20 years, describing it as a "personal agenda" with no apparent links to organized terrorism or broader motives. Authorities have ruled out a terror angle at this stage, noting that the suspect appeared intoxicated at the time of the attempt.
The incident has raised serious questions about security protocols for high-profile figures, particularly how an armed individual managed to get so close to a Z-plus protectee in a crowded social setting. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Farooq's son, described the event as a "very close shave" and credited the security detail for preventing tragedy. He highlighted that the close protection team deflected the shot, thwarting what he termed an assassination attempt, and called for a thorough investigation into the lapse.

Political reactions have been swift, with leaders across parties condemning the attack and demanding accountability. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq sought a comprehensive probe, while opposition voices, including from Congress, emphasized the need to address deteriorating security in the region. The National Conference has stressed that such incidents underscore vulnerabilities even for veteran leaders with longstanding public presence in Jammu and Kashmir.
Investigators continue to question Jamwal to uncover any deeper personal grievances or triggers behind his long-held intent. The episode occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions, though police maintain it appears isolated and non-political in nature. Authorities have assured a detailed inquiry, with the focus on how the attacker accessed the venue and evaded initial checks. Farooq Abdullah remains unharmed and active, with the family expressing gratitude for the swift security response that averted a potential tragedy.
