West Bengal CM Orders Probe Into 'Anti-National' Graffiti at JU Hostel

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has directed an immediate inquiry into alleged “anti-national” graffiti and posters reported inside the boys’ hostel of Jadavpur University’s Arts unit. The direction came days after a violent clash reportedly broke out between supporters of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-backed student organisations at the university. The administration has been asked to examine the material and establish the circumstances surrounding its appearance.

Mr. Adhikari directed the university’s Vice-Chancellor and senior officials of the State higher education department to initiate the inquiry. The investigation is expected to examine the graffiti and posters reported on the hostel premises and determine whether any rules or laws were violated. Authorities have also been asked to look into the circumstances in which the material was displayed and identify those responsible if wrongdoing is established.

In a post on X, Mr. Adhikari described educational institutions as important spaces for learning, academic excellence and nation-building. He expressed concern over what he described as objectionable, violent and “anti-national” wall graffiti and drawings inside the Arts Division boys’ hostel. His remarks came against the backdrop of heightened tensions at the university following the reported confrontation between rival student groups.

The alleged graffiti has added another point of contention at Jadavpur University, where political differences among student organisations have previously resulted in disputes. The latest development follows the reported clash involving ABVP supporters and students affiliated with Left-backed groups. The authorities are now expected to investigate both the disputed material and any circumstances that may have contributed to tensions on the campus.

The inquiry by university and higher education officials is expected to determine the nature of the graffiti and posters and whether they constitute a violation of university regulations or other applicable provisions. Officials may also examine available evidence, including accounts from students and hostel authorities, to establish when the material appeared and who may have been responsible.
