Uttarakhand Sees Severe Waterlogging as Orange Alert Sounded For Six Districts

Heavy rainfall has continued across Uttarakhand, triggering severe waterlogging and flood-like conditions in several areas, particularly along the Bhimtal-Nainital stretch. Visuals emerging from the region showed roads and neighbourhoods submerged under muddy water following intense downpours. The India Meteorological Department has issued yellow and orange alerts for different parts of the state as rainfall activity remains strong.

Videos circulating online showed severe waterlogging around Bhimtal, with streams of rainwater flowing onto the bypass and surrounding roads. Other visuals showed streets completely covered with muddy water, while water was also seen entering residential properties. A video from the region additionally showed a mudslide amid the continuing rainfall, highlighting the risks posed by unstable slopes and saturated ground in the hilly terrain.

The weather department has forecast light rain accompanied by thunderstorms in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Pauri Garhwal and Haridwar. Orange alerts have been issued for Almora, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh. Authorities and residents in these areas are expected to remain alert as further rainfall could worsen waterlogging, increase runoff and create additional risks in vulnerable locations.

The continuing downpour has also affected river systems across the state. Several major river basins have witnessed rising water levels, while heavy overnight rainfall in Dehradun and nearby areas caused the Tamasa River to swell. The conditions have raised concerns about flooding in low-lying areas, particularly where intense rainfall combines with swollen rivers and drainage problems.

Rain-related disruption has also affected education in Dehradun district. Government, private and non-government schools from Classes 1 to 12, along with Anganwadi centres, were closed amid forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall. The precautionary closures came as authorities assessed the potential risks to students and staff from waterlogging, flooding and difficult travel conditions.

With heavy rain continuing, residents in affected districts have been advised to remain cautious and monitor official weather and local administration updates. The combination of intense rainfall, swollen rivers, waterlogged roads and the possibility of mudslides presents significant challenges across Uttarakhand. Authorities are closely watching vulnerable areas as further showers could intensify the flood-like conditions in parts of the state.
