US Confirms Sergio Gor as Ambassador to India Despite Government Shutdown
Sergio Gor confirmed as US Ambassador to India amid US government shutdown.
In a significant development for US-India relations, the US Senate confirmed Sergio Gor, 38, as the next United States Ambassador to India on Tuesday, October 7, 2025. Gor was among 107 nominees approved in a single en bloc vote, securing 51 votes in favor and 47 against, despite the ongoing US government shutdown that began on October 1, 2025. The confirmation also included Paul Kapur as Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs and Anjani Sinha as Ambassador to Singapore.
Nominated by former President Donald Trump in August 2025, Gor, the Director of Presidential Personnel, was also appointed Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. Trump lauded Gor as a “great friend” and a trusted aide, emphasizing the importance of having a reliable representative in “the most populous region in the world” to advance his agenda and strengthen America’s global standing. “Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador,” Trump stated.
India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, welcomed the nomination, noting that it underscores the priority the US places on its bilateral relationship with India. During his Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing last month, Gor highlighted India’s pivotal role, stating, “India is a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond.” He emphasized his commitment to advancing US interests through strengthened trade ties, which he believes will enhance American competitiveness and counter China’s economic influence in the region.

Gor also underscored India’s critical role in regional stability, declaring, “A stable South Asia is in the interest of the United States and all nations.” He described the US-India partnership as a defining force for the 21st century, signaling his intent to deepen cooperation in security, trade, and regional stability.
The confirmation, achieved amidst a government shutdown, reflects the US’s commitment to maintaining robust diplomatic ties with India. As Gor prepares to take up his role, his appointment is poised to bolster the strategic partnership, fostering collaboration on trade, security, and global challenges.
