Unique Vehicle Number HR88B8888 Sold For ₹1.17 Crore to Haryana Entrepreneur
Haryana businessman wins online auction for unique vehicle number HR88B8888 with record ₹1.17 crore bid.
A businessman from Bhiwani village in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district has set a new national record by securing the fancy vehicle registration number HR88B8888 for a staggering ₹1.17 crore in an online auction conducted by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The week-long bidding, which concluded on November 26, 2025, started at a modest reserve price of ₹50,000 but quickly escalated as 45 participants vied for the coveted plate, surpassing the previous high of ₹37.91 lakh paid for HR22W2222 just a week earlier.
The number’s extraordinary appeal lies in its visual and numerological symmetry: the “B” flanked by seven 8s forms an unbroken sequence of the auspicious digit eight, widely regarded in Indian culture as a symbol of wealth and prosperity. “HR” denotes Haryana, “88” identifies the Charkhi Dadri RTO, and the final “B8888” completes the pattern that many believe brings good fortune. Speaking anonymously to PTI, the winner—who runs a transport business and is developing a logistics app—said he had no fixed budget and simply kept bidding because he loved the number.
The bidder now has five working days to deposit the full amount with the transport department. Once cleared, the plate will be reserved for two years at the Kundli RTO in the Sonipat district, after which he must assign it to a vehicle. He admitted he is still deciding which luxury car will bear the historic number, adding that the intense media attention caught him by surprise.

Haryana’s e-auction system, held every week from Friday to Wednesday, has turned fancy registration numbers into a lucrative revenue stream for the state. Participation requires a ₹1,000 registration fee and a ₹10,000 refundable security deposit, with VIP series often fetching multiples of the vehicle’s own cost. A similar frenzy has been witnessed across India—Telangana’s TG07R9999 sold for ₹88 lakh, and Delhi’s DL01CC0001 once crossed ₹20 crore in private deals—reflecting a growing status symbol among affluent buyers.
The ₹1.17 crore bid not only eclipses every previous public auction record but also underscores the fusion of cultural beliefs with modern wealth display in India’s booming luxury car market. Transport officials expect the bar to be raised even higher in coming months as more ultra-premium series are released.
As the businessman finalizes payment and chooses his car, HR88B8888 has already entered the record books as India’s most expensive publicly auctioned registration number, a glittering testament to the power of eights on Indian roads.
