Trump's Trusted Aide Sergio Gor Strengthens US-India Bond Through Trade Breakthrough
Sergio Gor, US ambassador to India since January, negotiated a tariff reduction to 18% and praises the strong Modi-Trump friendship.
Sergio Gor, the newly appointed US Ambassador to India, has quickly emerged as a pivotal figure in strengthening bilateral ties between Washington and New Delhi. Just a month into his tenure, Gor played a key role in negotiating a trade deal under which the United States reduced tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18%, marking one of the lowest tariff rates announced by the US for a major export economy.
Gor described the agreement as a reflection of the “strong friendship” between the two nations and highlighted the “limitless potential” of US-India relations. The tariff truce, he said, opens a new chapter in economic and diplomatic ties, replacing the punitive 50% tariff imposed on Indian exports the previous year.
Born Sergey Gorokhovsky in 1986 in Tashkent, then part of the Soviet Union, Gor later adopted the name Sergio Gor. His family lived in Malta before moving to the United States in the late 1990s, where he became a US citizen. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Affairs from George Washington University and is fluent in Maltese, Spanish, and Russian.

Before his ambassadorial role, Gor had a long career in US politics and communications. He served as Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office under Donald Trump, overseeing federal appointments with strict loyalty checks. His earlier roles include Communications Director for congressional campaigns, press secretary for Representative Michele Bachmann, and Deputy Chief of Staff and Foreign Policy Advisor to Senator Rand Paul.
Gor also gained recognition as Chief of Staff of the Trump Victory Finance Committee and as CEO of Winning Team Publishing, a conservative publishing house that produced several of Trump’s best-selling books. His close association with the Trump family earned him the nickname “Mayor of Mar-a-Lago,” referencing Trump’s Florida resort.
At 38, Gor has leveraged his political acumen and strong connections to rapidly become an influential voice in US-India diplomacy. Observers see his appointment and immediate impact on trade talks as a signal of the Trump administration’s strategic intent to strengthen economic engagement with India.
