Tripura Plans AI Policy With NITI Aayog Backing to Tackle Traffic, Floods and Waste Management

CM Saha announced the AI policy at the launch of the Tripura State Innovation Mission in Hapania.

Tripura is set to launch its first-ever artificial intelligence (AI) policy, aimed at improving city management, promoting innovation, and strengthening digital governance, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha announced on Thursday. The policy is being formulated with support from NITI Aayog and the Atal Innovation Mission, marking a significant step in integrating AI technology into public administration across the state.

Speaking at the launch of the Tripura State Innovation Mission at the International Exhibition Centre in Hapania, CM Saha highlighted the potential of AI in addressing urban challenges in Agartala, a smart city. Planned applications include traffic management, flood control, waste management, power supply optimisation, drinking water distribution, and property assessment. The initiative seeks to leverage AI solutions to improve efficiency and responsiveness in city governance.

The AI policy will be complemented by the country’s first district innovator fellowship, aimed at fostering grassroots innovators and encouraging local problem-solving. CM Saha said the fellowship will support individuals and startups developing AI-driven solutions tailored to district-level needs, promoting entrepreneurship and technological engagement among the youth.

In addition to the AI policy, Tripura plans to establish an AI Centre of Excellence with assistance from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The state also aims to create an IT and data economic zone to boost the software, IT-enabled services (ITeS), and data centre ecosystem, catering to growing enterprise demand and creating opportunities for digital businesses in the region.

CM Saha emphasized that Tripura has emerged as a leader in digital governance, with all government operations from the Secretariat to village panchayats functioning completely paperless. He noted that the State Innovation Mission aims to synergise government, academia, industry, startups, investors, and communities into a cohesive ecosystem that addresses challenges in agriculture, green technology, digital services, tourism, and healthcare.

Innovation centres will be established in all districts to decentralise the state’s innovation infrastructure, providing local access to mentorship, resources, and technological support. The AI policy and associated initiatives reflect Tripura’s broader strategy to harness technology for governance, drive economic opportunities, and translate youth aspirations into practical, high-impact enterprises across the state.
