Tripura CM Manik Saha To Discuss Scaling Down Convoy Size Following PM Modi’s Appeal
Tripura CM considers reducing convoy after PM appeal.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday said he would discuss with the state’s Director General of Police the possibility of reducing the size of his security convoy, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal encouraging austerity, fuel conservation, and more efficient use of government resources.
Speaking to reporters at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala after returning from Guwahati, CM Saha said he personally supports the idea of minimising the number of vehicles in official convoys, provided that security requirements are not compromised. He indicated that any final decision would be taken after consultations with senior police officials.
The Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, noted that he has often preferred using fewer vehicles and security personnel. However, he said operational decisions have traditionally been guided by security agencies, and any changes would need their approval to ensure safety standards are maintained.

CM Saha’s remarks come amid a broader push by several political leaders and government departments to align administrative practices with calls for cost efficiency and reduced public expenditure. Reports indicate that multiple states are considering steps such as limiting official convoy sizes, reducing travel costs, and encouraging the use of shared or public transport for official duties where feasible.
The discussion also follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal urging citizens to adopt fuel-saving habits, including increased use of public transport, carpooling, electric vehicles, and reduced non-essential travel. His remarks were made in the context of global economic pressures linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis, which has impacted energy markets.
In line with these directions, some government sources have suggested that ministries may also explore measures such as integrating electric vehicles into official fleets and reducing large-scale ceremonial expenses. CM Saha said he would take up the matter formally with the state police chief before moving ahead with any structural changes to his convoy arrangements.
