Trio Arrested for Brutal Assault in Tripura

Women tortured over affair rumors

Three women have been arrested in Tripura’s Gomati district for allegedly assaulting another woman and attempting to shave her head over accusations of an extramarital affair, police confirmed on Tuesday. The incident, which took place in Bhangerpar on Friday, gained widespread attention after a disturbing video of the attack went viral on social media on Sunday, prompting swift action from authorities.

The accused, identified as Manju Rani Das, Putul Rani Das, and Hamida Banu, aged between 50 and 60, were apprehended on Monday following a complaint filed by the victim’s husband at a women’s police station in Gomati. “We’ve lodged a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing grievous hurt, assault, and criminal intimidation,” said Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar. The women, reportedly friends of the victim’s mother-in-law, allegedly lured the victim to a location before attacking her, driven by a domestic dispute. The investigation is ongoing, with the accused set to appear in court on Tuesday.

The Tripura Commission for Women, led by chairperson Jharna Debbarma, condemned the attack, calling it a “shocking act of vigilantism.” Debbarma urged the public to report grievances to authorities rather than resorting to violence. “No one can take the law into their own hands,” she stated, demanding strict action against the perpetrators. The viral video, showing the victim tied up and mocked, has sparked outrage, with civil society groups labeling the act as “barbaric.” Police are examining whether others were involved in the mob-like assault.
