TMC Legislative Meeting Cancelled After Low Attendance at Kolkata Residence

Mass MLAs skip signals internal unrest in TMC.

A significant political controversy has emerged within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) after a scheduled legislative party meeting at former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat reportedly failed to take place due to low attendance. According to party sources, 60 of the 80 TMC MLAs did not attend the meeting, forcing its cancellation and raising questions about internal cohesion within the ruling party in West Bengal.

The meeting had been called by legislative party leader Shovandeb Chattopadhyay, but only around 20 MLAs reportedly turned up. Sources claimed that several absent legislators could not be reached at the time. The party later attributed the low attendance to ongoing political developments and protests following recent attacks on senior leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh defended the situation, stating that many MLAs were engaged in protests and organisational activities after alleged attacks on party leaders. He said that Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s All India General Secretary, had been attacked earlier, followed by an incident involving Kalyan Banerjee, which had triggered widespread protests across various parts of the state.

The party also announced a series of protest programmes, including demonstrations across wards and blocks on June 1 and a major rally led by Mamata Banerjee on June 2 at Rani Rashmoni Road. According to party leaders, these events were prioritised over the internal meeting, leading to the postponement of the legislative gathering for the time being.

However, the large-scale absence of MLAs has drawn political attention, with observers noting it as a potential sign of internal unease within the TMC. The fact that senior leaders such as Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra, Nayana Bandopadhyay, and others were present, while many legislators stayed away, has further intensified speculation about factional dynamics within the party.

The development comes shortly after reported incidents involving physical attacks on Abhishek Banerjee in Hooghly’s Chanditala and Kalyan Banerjee in a separate incident, both of which have added to the political tension in the state. With the TMC preparing for statewide protests, the situation highlights both external challenges and emerging internal strains within the party’s organisational structure in West Bengal.
