Telangana Government Considers Beer and Whisky Price Hike in Hyderabad
Telangana review may raise beer and whisky prices.
Alcoholic drinks such as beer and whisky are poised to become more expensive in Hyderabad and across Telangana after brewers and distillery operators submitted proposals to the state government seeking a price revision of up to about 15 per cent. The government has begun reviewing these suggestions amid rising production costs and broader industry pressures.
According to sources familiar with the matter, several breweries have formally asked Telangana’s Excise Department to raise retail prices by roughly 12 – 15 per cent, citing higher costs for fuel, natural gas, raw materials and other inputs needed for production and transportation. Distillery owners have made similar representations, hoping a revised price structure would lessen financial strain.
If approved, the changes would mark one of the more substantial liquor price revisions in the state in recent months, following earlier hikes and excise adjustments made in 2025. Telangana has previously seen beer and other alcoholic beverages become more expensive as part of revenue measures and industry responses to inflationary pressures.

Industry analysts say the proposals reflect broader cost pressures facing alcoholic beverage makers in India, where packaging, fuel and logistics have all grown more expensive. However, unlike non‑alcoholic beverages, liquor companies cannot unilaterally raise prices — they must secure state approval for any revision, which requires bureaucratic review and policy decisions.
Consumer groups and retailers are likely to watch developments closely, as a significant price increase could affect buying behaviour and consumption patterns, especially in urban centres like Hyderabad where alcohol taxes and levies are already among the higher end in India. Past price hikes have at times been followed by debates over affordability and retail practices.
Officials from Telangana’s excise department have not yet confirmed when a final decision will be made, but a formal announcement is expected after the review process is completed. If implemented, the higher rates could come into effect in the coming weeks, directly impacting liquor store prices and consumer spending on alcoholic beverages in the state.
